Problem: An advocate for the blind has stated that electric and hybrid autos are so quiet that blind pedestrians cannot detect their presence, creating a safety hazard at crosswalks. Their concerns have been voiced to Congress, resulting in introduction of H.R. 734, a bill intended to establish an audibility standard for hybrid and electric cars.

Solution: A product which remedies this situation consists of:

1) A Locator Module which the pedestrian activates when preparing to cross a street or parking lot

2) A Sounder Module mounted in the electric/hybrid vehicle which sounds an audible tone when activated by the Locator Module

Benefits: The Locator Module activates any Sounder Module within about 25 - 30 feet. Field tests have shown that this gives the pedestrian enough warning, and gives an audible target by which the pedestrian may judge the location, speed and direction of the electric/hybrid vehicle. P.A.S.S. also:

· Warns the vehicle’s driver that there is a blind pedestrian nearby

· Allows the hybrid/electric vehicle to operate quietly until a pedestrian needs to hear it

· Can be used to provide blind pedestrians a warning of the presence of other quiet vehicles
